I am a pessimistic optimist. Ultimately things will turn out fine but I tend to be negative until then.

A realist sees a flower, and does not need to touch it to know it has thorns. Both optimism and pessimism are materialistic characterizations and require that people are emotionally affected by external stimulus. I vote we do neither!
