I need to read a novel for school, and they gave us an extensive list. I narrowed it down a bit, but still can't decide. If you have an opinion on any of these novels, please post.
Aké: The Years of Childhood
The Road from Coorain
True North
The Metamorphosis
The Trial
Robinson Crusoe
Great Expectations
Oliver Twist
A Tale of Two Cities
The Heart of the Matter
Brave New World
The Confessions
Emile
Candide
Zadig
The Black Tulip
The Three Musketeers
Clear Light of Day
The Woman in the Dunes
Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness
War and Peace
Fathers and Sons
The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha
Which do you think I should read?

Just so y'all know more about what I generally enjoy reading, I like books that show other cultures, and I also like philosophical-social commentary type books. I read Vanity Fair and didn't like it (I dunno why, but that seems relevant)
Also, I have to write an essay on the author's life, a summarizing essay, and a research paper on the book, so a better-known book and author would probably be easier to find things for the projects.

I think The Metamorphosis would be a great pick for you! I have read it a couple of times. Kafka is an awesome auther and from what you said about liking philosophical and social commentaries, you will like it! There is so much going on behind this book, you will learn something new each time you read it, especially if you research Kafka! Enjoy!

From your list, I only read some like
Robinson Crusoe, about an adventure in an island
Great Expectations, about a man who love a woman who doesn't love him back
Oliver Twist, about the life of an orphan boy
The Three Musketeers, about an love, adventure, etc.
Those books are great but I prefer Oliver Twist, it's touching..

Don Quixote!
It's a cultural read and will give you TONS of topics you can write about. But it's also a good read; it won't drag on like War and Peace will, and the language is understandable and approachable.

I loved Robinson Crusoe for the details of his survival on the island (think of that movie with whatshisname talking to the coconut). The language is a little tough since the book was written a long time ago, but that's true of many of the titles on your list.

I read The Three Musketeers and found it a very good book. It was easy reading and contained a bit of humor. I also enjoyed the movie.
