Okay, I don't know if your pistol was really a "suppressed" pistol or not. I'd figure if it really was, you'd know it. It could have just had a heavy target barrel, which to some, look like a suppressor. Either way, a small caliber, such as a .22LR has almost no visible flash from the shooter's perspective due to the relatively small amount of powder. At night, you'd probably see a flare of light and that'd be it. A larger handgun, such as a 40 S&W, .45, .44 Mag, etc., would have a visible flash, even during the daylight. But most shooters are so focused on their target, plus a recoiling slide, that they don't notice the flash. It would be more pronounced in a revolver due to the fact that some of the gas escapes between the gap in the cylinder and the barrel. This is why a suppressor (or silencer) is pretty much useless in a revolver.

I used to hunt and practice targets with a Mauser. Yes, you can see a bit of flash or some fire with it, but I only noticed that when I watched other people shoot it. Maybe you should watch other people fire your gun too because I usually notice the small amount of what looks like a flame follow the shot when someone else is shooting. I don't usually pay attention to the fire coming out of the gun when I shoot, but it's easier to notice when you are watching others fire guns.

The first time I fired a gun when I was very young, the kickback surprised me, and I saw a great flash! I fell backwards which may have had some effect on that flash, but maybe I should have rested the tail of the gun on my shoulder as opposed to just the center of my face...

How powerful is the gun you are using? A weaker gun (and weaker ammo) will have less muzzle flash. Also what time of day are you practicing???? A flash will be less visible in the daylight.

I have only fired a gun once in my life and believe me there was a flash.

There's no brilliant flash. The flash was added to games for effect, because the games weren't capable of giving you recoil or the sound of a gunshot so loud it makes you blink.
