Check both ends of the cable and make sure the connections are secure. If that doesn't work, see if you can find another cable to see if the cable you have has gone bad.

A couple of things to check, make sure your reuter, dsl or cable modem is on, make sure the cable at both ends is in all the way, make sure your laptop is recognizing your Network Adapter (sometimes the drivers get corrupted) and also make sure your Local Arean Connection (LAN) is not disabled. I hope that helps you resolve your issue.

Make sure that you have a good network cable (CAT5). Also make sure the device you are plugging into from your laptop is on. I assume you are plugging directly into the cable modem from what you stated.
