The tat machine moves the needle(s) in a very fast motion. You are not going feel each individual stroke. It is rare for there to be only one needle. That is usually reserved for very fine detail that you would not get on your first tat. Plus in a way it seems to hurt more that the larger groupings. Liners usually have 3 to 5 needles... Shaders can get up to a ridiculous number. It is a mixture of a small sting and a good sunburn. Of course this depends on your tolerance and where on your body you get the tat.

RE:
How exactly does a tattooing needle work?
I want to get a tattoo in a few years but i dont fully understand how the needles work. Is there one needle quickly going in and out or are there more than one needle? Also, what would you compare the pain of a tattoo to?

I have been tattooed around 13 times, in several different countries. Like someone has already mentioned, there are different types of needles. There are very small ones with a single needle for outlining very fine lines and there are ones with multiple needles up to like 5-7 for shading and filling in. Some artists modify their needles as well. Some will flatten the end of the tube to make a really wide path which allows for faster filling in. Also, the traditional method is done with bamboo, which those dont hurt half as bad as one would think. Most tattoos do hurt to some extent, I usually gauge the next tattoo placement by roughly scratching myself with my finger nail.

Well it has e very small hole at the tip so when it is dipped in ink it holds some. Each time your skin is penetrated which is like 100 times a second it leaves a little ink.
When getting fine lines there is only one needle in use but when shading and or filling more needles are in use at the same time. When I had my back done it is pretty dark so they used an 8 mag. Yes that is 8 needles at once.
Its kinda like a really deep itch that you cant ever scratch at first. In the healing process its comparible to minor road rash.

I think it feels more like a scratching, but everybody is different.
The amount of needles depends on the type of tattoo. Liners have smaller groupings of needles, and larger groupings are for filling in. Think of different paintbrushes.
Tattoo needles are tiny and are not like piercing needles. They dont go in very deep either.

Hey I've got a tattoo and i don't think it was that painful at all. I'm not really sure how many needles they use but there only little ones. The outline is the worse bit but once you get started your arm goes numb anyway and you don't really notice it. The way i can describe the pain its like somebody nipping u but times it by 10. But really its not that bad. I suggest going for a quite small 1 first if your not sure

I was just having this conversation with someone who knows a tattoo artist. The needle goes into 4 of the 7 layers of skin. Shocking, isn't it?

PERSONAL SUGGESTION:Don't go for it.
It's an injection sort of a thing with a few needles on it. Color is filled in the injecting pen and injected in the upper layer of the skin, where it stays and causes HAVOC. Studies have shown that people with tattoos are more prone to skin cancer etc.
the pain is just like a thousand injections priking you simulatneously and believe me, it's really PAINFUL until you are a maniac to take all that up.

There is a calbe show called Miami Ink. It is a tattoo parlor in Miami that really gives good details on tatooing. I really don't know about the needles or pain. I'ver always wanted to get one- but I'm too chicken...
