would have been nice to know which city..i love martial arts :) but to answer your question, i am sure there is an ordinance and state law against it. the city will come after you b/c if it's a public park (and i'm sure it is), anyone who gets hurt can sue the city. to have an organized event of that type, requires a permit. and i seriously doubt that the city will grant you a permit for that sort of thing, if you are not a registered teacher and/or business. in that sense, as far as the city should be concerned...you guys are a work out support group :)

as far as paying charging money. to me, you nave more of an issue if one of the students gets hurt, and sues! you have nothing to limit your liability. not only are u not certified to teach the class, you are not a registered business?? it's gonna get yucky if one of those "friends" of yours gets hurt and decides teacher should pay for the medical bills!

the next person who is going to be pissed with you, is Uncle Sam! yeah yeah, the city/state wants you to register as a business. but Sammy wants you to pay taxes on those bucks!

so those are your major problems, as i see it. the city (wants no liability), the students (can sue your butt) and Uncle Sam (wants your money!)

this isn't the officer of the court talking, this is ________(my name)....ONLY TAKE CASH! u need no proof that these people are paying you. lol.

If there are laws about use of the park, they are probably local laws, not state laws. Even if they allow the class, they may require a business license. I suggest asking at the local courthouse.

I'm not sure but if friends you are teaching then you dont have to say you are getting paid for it. Just as long its not advertise as a business. Check with your city. You maybe able to get a business permit with your address and state that you will be mobile and going from place to place. Just like a personal trainer would go from gym to gym or a person home.

Why would they outlaw martial arts classes? That must be something that took affect after I left the state. I know it was legal when I was there.

Get it out of a public area. I'm sure that is where the trouble lies.
