Their stores are often very close together and prices of lumber, drywall, and other commodity items will be identical. Neither store wants to take a hit with their almost identical "10% price guarantee".

The fine print of the guarantee specifies that the guarantee will only be honored on identical model numbers. The problem is that each of the two big retailers is large enough to force their suppliers to provide them merchandise with distinctive model numbers. For example, you will often see identical appliances with different model numbers.

In the end, there is not much price difference between them and it pays to shop them both.

Good luck with your home improvement shopping.

Funny, a guy in my History class works at Lowe's and we got into a discussion about this. Home depot is definately cheaper, but Lowe's provides better customer service and help on projects.

i think they are pretty equal, but i feel more comfortable in lowes because it is more of a home store and home depot concentrates more on the diy items. for example: i can buy paint at either store but if i want to look at curtains etc they have a much much better selection. also lowes seems to do a lot more of the same as cash financing and 0% for 12 months. That is always a big plus with me!

About the same. I shop at both and look for sales and clearances. If it is something I really need, like a repair item or specialty product, I go to Ace Hardware because they will have it--and that's what the guys at Lowes and Home Depot will say as well. Ace is not as cheap, but then they know what they are talking about when you ask them. The bigger stores have clerks that seem to be clueless.

As a contractor, I would say they are about the same in price. Not being sexist but Lowes is geared for the woman consumer. Home Depot is geared more for the contractor.
