I know how to use both Windows and Mac and I prefer the Mac OS.
It works the way you think it should, it feels as though the people who sat down to design the GUI actually finished the job, thinking of every little detail. Whereas the Windows designers seem to have gotten about 70% done and looked at one another and said "Good Enough, ship it!"
Computer nerds such as myself DO like getting inside a PC and overclocking them and doing all sorts of other modifications and customization, and so Windows machines are better if that's your bag.
But if you're like the majority of computer users that just want the dang computer to WORK, then a Mac is definitely the best.

I have always used Macs since I started using computers back in the 90's. Back then I could not understand why anyone would ever prefer to use DOS or Windows 3.1 to the Mac. The ease of use was SO MUCH superior. Windows has gotten a lot better but Macs are still better in my opinion. Just more enjoyable to use. No worries about viruses, either!

Everyone here sums it up well. The interface is intuitive and beautiful. The software is top notch. The machine itself is a beautiful piece of hardware. I just love all of the little things that Mac OS X does... I love the dock. I love Exposé, which is a wonderful way to navigate between open applications and the desktop. I love Dashboard and all of it's wonderful Widgets. I love how well my console emulators run on OS X. I love how OS X handles disk images and folders. I love the drag and drop ease of managing those disks, folders and files. It's all of the little things that make the Mac so great.
By the way, if my significant other tried to trade in my Macintosh (new or old) for a PC, I would probably be convicted of homicide.

I purchased my iMac recently because I wanted to try something new. I was tired of the risk involved with surfing the net on Windows XP. I heard that it's great for professional photo editting (altough there's no Photoshop for the Core Duo versions). I hear they last long because they don't build much as much garbage software as XP does, no offense. It seemed like a perfect little circle of Mac hardware and software with iLife, built in iSight, .Mac, iWork, and professional video and photo software available. It seemed so perfect to me when I made the decision for the switch; now I realize that they're near perfect. I love the seamless software. Crashes are near non-existent; I'm not lying when I say it just works. As simple as that. What's even better than before are the newest Intel chips, of course they're now outdated by Core 2 Duo; but the new Macs are just power plants, they're really powerful.

Refer to the long list of technical queries above. Most of those apply to PC only so a lot of the appeal of a Mac is streamlined functionality. However, for the same reason PC's are more flexible and easier to get inside and mess around with, overclock, etc. It's great for us all to have such a varied choice
p.s. the most commonly agreed upon advantage of the Mac is in Graphic applications. CAD, 3D Rendering, etc. and high end audio apps.

Past tense...I used my Mac because it was intuitive and easy to use. It always did what I wanted it to do and I learned how to use all the shortcut commands available. I had a Mac for about 12 years...but the mister decided it was getting too old and wanted to upgrade so he got this PC with a media center and all kinds of stuff so - Mac went to a new home. I miss the old gal. [sigh] My daughter is saving to buy her own Mac; she wants to do graphic manipulation and art work - and Mac is better for her purposes.

turn on: Sleek and Clean design. Cool factor, less virus, friendly interface.
turn off: Price, game and software availability, hard to do DIY maintenance.
