I have only had a few minor contusions and a scratch or two from falling while practicing this, but I am worried that something more serious may happen one day. I just want to know if there are any good books about this topic or if any of my fellow Yahoo! Answers participants have any advice for me about running up the escalator which is actually going down.

Well.....back in my day, I was the world-record holder for running up down escalators. I was outfitted with super-grip rubber shoes, elbow and knee pads, a helmet, and I even had gloves with grip on them. The gloves play a large role, I would get 60% of my speed from my arms, I would push my self up as I went. I hope this helps. Good luck escalator boy!

The obvious answer is to make sure you wear plenty of protection when doing this. Another help I have found when perfecting this art is try it with potential obstacles, such as people (preferably not of a nervous disposition) because then you can learn the slalom technique which is good for motor control and helping with balance. Also, again depending on escalator type, you can use the side dividers as potential grips and pit stops, particularly if the stairways is particularly fast moving or steep. This hobby can be particularly rewarding and can help with weight loss. Once again I hope this helps, my friend.

Well i must say that i am pretty good at running up escalators. You should hang on to the rail when you run up there might be less of a chance of you falling or hurting yourself and when you think you are ready let go of the rail and you might start going faster and you'll have the practice. There's nothing more you can do but practice but for myself i don't want to brag but it was a natural gift that i had. : )

i would suggest practicing early in the morning at the mall with all the runners that run around the mall even though outside is perfectly fine.

There is this guy who is supposedly an expert at it. He's a mall security guard in Columbia, MD. He's a middle-aged overweight man, but you'd be surprised at how nimble he is.
