The most misunderstood piece of symbolism on the South Carolina flag is it's "Crescent" or what is sometimes referred to as the "New Moon". This emblem actually has nothing to do with a moon at all. The "Crescent" worn on the caps of the South Carolina revolutionary soldiers was a stylized Criniere or Gorget. Thus, both symbols on the state flag are emblems of defensive prowess.

The crescent moon was South Carolina's symbol when it was a British Colony.

because the flag designer was a moonie ! that flag designer was strange ! the moon is just a ball of rock & sand that glows because the sun hits it. if there were no sun the moon would just be a black sky invisible to the nake eye (can you imagine what the south carolina flag would like like then?) .
