Dog. "Inu" means "dog" in Japanese. "Yasha" is one way of saying "Hanyou" or "half-demon". (If my memory serves me right.)

Plus, Kagome yells "Sit!" when she's mad at him. You don't tell a cat to "sit".

Inuyasha is a dog demon. His father was a powerful dog demon and his brother is a dog demon. I thought he was a cat once by the ears plus the way he plays with Kagoma's cat. I did research along time ago (about a year) found out the Inuyasha means dog demon. Inu is a Japanese word meaning dog & Yasha-demon.
Hope this helps

Inuyasha is a half demon- dog type. His brother Seshomaru is a wolf type.
Here's an excerpt right from Wikipedia:
The name "InuYasha" literally means "dog demon". Inu (犬) is a Japanese word meaning "dog". Yasha (夜叉) can be translated roughly to "Demon".
For more info see the wikipedia site listed in links, or just google 'inuyasha'

I see you have many people giving you the correct answer, but as a Inuyasha specific otaku I'm going to hold my head in my hands for just a minute. I know, I know not everyone like the show as much as I do, or have even watched it, but if you've seen the first episode you should know...Do you say sit to a cat...GAH CAT DEMON!!!! CAT DEMON!!!!!!! I'll be offended for my favorite cartoon character. How many of my fellow otaku wish we could pet those puppy ears *sanity fades*. Puppy ears, fluffy transvestite half brothers, *does a Homer Simpson (animated hotties) drool* I think I've embarrassed myself enough I should leave before my geek get arrested for indecent exposure.

He's half demon, half dog. If he's a cat, he's name not Inuyasha, maybe Nekoyasha (I said maybe, I'm not expert in japanese)...
