Many believe that they were scraped or dug out by slow moving glaciers during the Ice Age. Look up the great lakes in an encyclopedia. It is always so much more rewarding to learn about a subject yourself. You may find out many facts that will last you a lifetime or lead to other interests. For example, I learned this fact by looking in an encyclopedia many, many, many years ago! I used to read the encyclopedia for amusement. Try it. You'll like it!
