My list differs a little from yours, but without bringing personal prefrence into this, I have to speak against the reasons you've listed some of the bands.

Led Zeppelin in NO way started Heavy Metal. That was all Black Sabbath's territory. Listen to Led Zeppelin I, II, and III. They don't get heavy until Led Zeppelin IV, and even then, its only on two and a half songs (Rock & Roll, the end of Stairway To Heaven, and When The Levee Breaks). As for Stairway To Heaven, "plus Stairway" is often a claim that people that have JUST gotten into Zeppelin make. Not that its a problem or anything, just don't think I'd list that as a reason they'd be number one. Led Zeppelin played the blues, plain and simple, except they played them LOUD. They just happened to have one of the best guitarists of all time, and one of the best drummers of all time.

As for the Rolling Stones... ...No. They were not "one of the first rock bands". Bill Haley & His Comets, The Midnighters, The Beatles, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Shadows, and countless other rock bands existed long before The Stones. The Rolling Stones, while commercially successful, are not creative at all. Nearly everything they had done, The Beatles had done first, and this was before we started praising them for everything.

I'll agree with Black Sabbath being on this list. Take a listen to "The Wizard", "Hole In The Sky", and "N.I.B.", probably my three favorite Sabbath songs.

Aerosmith suffered a bout of no popularity whatsoever from the end of the 80s to when they remade "Walk This Way" with Run DMC. Were it not for Run DMC, they may not even be playing today.

I have to disagree with Metallica being anywhere near this list. They may be fast, but they are not "as fast as metal gets". That title goes to DragonForce (Really, not just personal preference). Metallica hardly innovated anything. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, they innovated. Slayer innovated. Heck, I'd say Lordi is more innovative than Metallica.

Judas Priest is just a popular metal band. Can't really say I'd put them on my list, but I can't think of a reason why they shouldn't explicitly be on one.

Nirvana may have made Grunge popular, but that was... ...well, all they did. They're probably the most overrated band of all time, and its only because Cobain shot himself. Alice In Chains, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden did more for Grunge than Nirvana ever did.

Iron Maiden is a great choice. True champions of Heavy Metal.

Queen is also a great choice. The amount that Freddy, Brian and the boys gave to music in GENERAL is amazing.

Can't say I agree with Deep Purple. They had two hits and that was really it, they didn't bring anything new to rock.

Here's my list of influential bands. I assume we're going with HARD ROCK, but I'll give two just in case.

Hard Rock List
10. Cream
09. ZZ Top
08. Ozzy Osbourne (Solo Career)

By the influence I think the list is

1. The Who
2. The Doors
3. Deep Purple (smoke on the water,duh,duh,duh......)
4. Led Zeppelin (started heavy metal, plus Stairway to Heaven)
5. Black Sabbath (started heavy metal, plus Iron Man)
6. Rolling Stones (one of the first rock bands)
7. Judas Priest (metal gods)
8. Aerosmith (have never been unpopular)
9. Queen (have made some pretty memorable anthems).
10. Kiss
11. Scorpions
12. AC/DC
13. Iron Maiden (the most successful heavy metal band ever)
14. Motörhead
15. Manowar
16. Metallica (as fast as metal gets)
17. Nirvana (made grunge popular).

I added some other groups because they had influence in the music of the other (as Motörhead and Manowar who had great influence on Metallica).

Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath have influence each other (the order can change) and the three together change rock music.

Doors and Who aren't so heavy metal but they showed the path, they teach all the other.
