We would do this with the feed for our milk cows. With cane mostly but also with millit, corn stalks whatever we had to feed the cows.

Here you go, a picture of amish corn shocks in Ohio:

A Yahoo search for "corn shocks" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 2,120 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, you will find many more pictures. By the way, many "pick your own" pumpkin farms decorate their fields and public areas with old fashioned corn shocks at Haloween pumpkin picking time.

Good luck with your search.

No pictures, which is a shame, as my family still shocked feed into the mid 70's. We couldn't afford a baler, so my dad fixed up an old twine binder and we bundled the feed for several years, stacked it in shocks then hauled it in to the barn. May have been one of the last farms to do this in the country. Thanks for bringing back the memory!

You might check with your library about a magazine Reminisce (sp). It is a sister to Birds and Blooms-- and others. You will find pictures of the old days in every issue-- and no ads.
good luck
