I read this somewhere once and it made sense to me.
in many cultures as a rite of passage into manhood it is often requred that a boy be able to hunt. Aka you are not a man until you have made your first kill for the dinner table.
a boy lucky enought to be able to catch/kill a rabbit at a very young age would become a man of the tribe at that very young age.
He would wear the foot as proof of his manhood status at least until he was old enough that people would take his word for it that he was a man. if he killed something more dangerous like a bear later then he would wear the bear paw or teeth instead.

the rabbits foot was proof that he was a 'Lucky' hunter

It could serve as a warning to other animals, especially killer rabbits, that you are a superior beast to be feared; so they won't attack you.

The rabbit may consider itself very lucky. All rabbits die, many of starvation or boredom, but few get to truely make a difference in the world. Knowing that his or her feet will better mankind for at least a few weeks before its thrown away probably made the rabbit feel very special!

rabbits were sacred to a number of pre-Christian goddesses
their speed in running, and their fertility
there was a particular goddess whose war symbols were rabbits, and the moon.
devotees of her would release a rabbit before a battle and go in the direction where it ran, as they battle, can't think of her name, I think, her name was Astarte/Eostre- hence the word Easter. But it has to do with fertility, and speed, and luck in battle.
a bit of pre Christian symbolism that has survived into the digital age.
