some Americans say that the "U.S. army/military is fighting for the country's freedom"?
I wasn't aware someone was trying to take freedom away from Americans. So then, how does one arrive at that conclusion?
This is a serious question. I'll appreciate a serious answers.
Thank you.

In other words, how do I get from point "A" (military presence in Iraq, for example) to point "B" (America's freedom)???

I have the impression this is a phrase used by the less educated portion of the population.

PENNY. Sorry. I didn't get you...so your opinion is some people use the phrase improperly sometimes. 'Cause in the case on the military presence in Iraq I don't see what America's freedom has to do with it. Yet people use the catch phrase to support the troops.

No, some very educated people would also use it. Many Americans believe that terrorism is trying to take our freedom away. Some liberals have even argued that in order for the U.S. government to protect us from these terrorists, some of our personal freedoms have already been lost. I don't agree with that. Nonetheless, many believe that Iraq as well as other Mideastern countries sponsor these terrorists and commit terror on their own people as Saddam has done in the past. Therefore, we are protecting our freedom by fighting for it in Iraq. Others believe that countries who are not free, threaten our freedom by their very existence. I have a feeling that you won't believe either of these explanations are valid.

Actually education has little to do with it - in case you haven't noticed over the last 30 years we have become more and more federally ran - this is taking away our freedoms - we didn't need outsiders to contribute. However, American freedom is an ideal - not something particularly tangible - but something that is made up of spirit - that's what they fight for - the ideal of America - however, it's also why many are against this war - because the ideals that used to make America what she was are no longer even in existence. So, it is a call to the oldest of the baby boomers and their parents to say we fight for American freedom - it means something to them - to the rest of us - we've seen freedom slowly diminish so we don't see how the conclusion is arrived. My greater concern is if we truly wanted to 'fight the war' why didn't we start right here at home?

You'd have to begin with the assumption that terrorists are threatening America's freedom by threatening Americans at home and abroad. Then you'd have to assume that Iraq had something to do with terrorism, which would mean that attacking Iraq would prevent terrorism which threatens Americans which threatens their freedom.
The reasoning is sound, but all of the assumptions are incorrect. I would say that attacking Iraq has created more terrorists than it stopped. The same is true of Israel attacking Lebanon, though, so you can't lay all the blame on the U.S.

There are lots of reasons why we are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Some of them are good reasons.
Most of them are bad reasons.
None of them have anything to do with defending America's freedom. A frikkin' eight year old should be able to see that.

That is a rhetorical tactic. In rhetoric you use scare tactics, and try to bring people to your side through crisis mode which most of the time works if you use the right things such as a persons freedom and livelihood.

Actually, the people who are trying to take away our freedoms are our own gov't, but, it's considered bad form to overthrow your own gov't.. regardless of what our founding fathers did in the 18th century..
