Go to www.zipperfish.com and look under the "rants" section. There is a really good article on the decline of modern cinema.

Hmmm ... I think it's because we are not grooming writers.
For example, there was a show long ago called Your Show of Shows a lot of the writers from that tv show went on to be major writers for film and theater, Woody Allen was one of them.
So, with the massive numbers of reality shows and 'non-writing' shows, no writers are being nutured or trained .. most of the good shows on tv are written by just one guy.
When videotape was invented and eventually used for television and movies, it was possible to make material cheaper and cheaper so a lot of "copy cats" began imitating the lastest trends, so if a good war movie was made, suddenly we see ten more on the market. Not as well done, but attended by audiences hoping to get that same feeling the first one generated.
The cable industry with it's 24 hour programming and many channels need material, so a lot of watered down material gets created. It is almost like reading those old westerns or murdery mysteries ... it's a formula and predictable, satisfying in a romantic comedy like Two Week's Notice, not so much in a drama or "serious" work.
Movies have followed the way of television catering to the most basic of human interests ... blood, sex and magic.
Happily, interesting work does come out now and then ... I thought American Beauty and Sin City were very interesting and well done, for example.

The reason movies are so bad and so violent these days is because people keep going to those kind of movies. I only go to movies that have a good story. People should stop going to those bad movies so that the movie producers don't make any money.

Because they worry more about special effects more than an actual story line. Independence Day is a prime example and so are the new star wars movies (unfortunately.) Independence day was just stupid and the S.W. movies cared more about how a vehicle flies through space than giving something to back up those special effects like an interesting story and better dialog and acting. Which sucks because S.W. is such a great vehicle for entertainment, and they really screwed up.

Bad is what most folks love, because it's easy to follow and doesn't make them think.
