I think it's silly in a good way. Every great nation has some traditions that defy common sense. USA- Miss America,Punkin chunkin contest, bathtub racing. Japan has a traditional festival where they ride trees down a massive hill. Why? The running of the bulls in Spain. Day of the dead in Mexico. Russians love to party for no apparent reason and do that weird dance. The Brits have too many crazy traditions to mention lol. Maybe it's a way for the whole nation to release stress. Think about it. You don't hear about crazy traditions in Iran,Egypt,Saudi Arabia,North Korea, or Rangoon (Mynamar). These are all places people want to leave. So kick back and wait for some Miss America with guts to finally say "screw world peace,I'm here for the cash and prizes".

A lot of this tripe is people trying to force their views on others.
So, 300,000 ugly feminists are angry that other women are beautiful, so they decreed such beauty displays are sexist; outdated; silly; and superficial. Who cares what a bunch of envious Uglies think about anything?
Obviously, the contestants don't think so or they wouldn't be there, would they? And, you guys don't think so, or you wouldn't be watching the beautiful babes, would you?
What about most women? Well, what do we spend for cosmetics in the US? I think in the 80's it was already around 16 billion dollars a year. If most women thought this was sexist; outdated; silly; and superficial; they wouldn't be spending so much time and money on their surface appearance, would they?
I am actually one who thinks female 'beauty' is the least important thing in a woman. Men who marry beautiful women are usually known as "ex-husbands." So, beauty must have a limited practical value.

It's a Beauty pageant!
I think it's Okay, and it's not sexist at all....
It's sort of an American Tradition...but you go to Miss Universe if you win, so it is a big deal for the girl who wins!
