Why do people believe conspiracy theories?

Doing research for a website about conspiracy theories.

What is it that makes some people believe conspiracy theories?

I can't figure it out myself. Maybe they just find it far too disturbing that it could happen the way it did, so they have to make up these elaborate conspiracies because then it makes more sense to them and, in some ways, they can control the uncontrollable.
