I would find the body of water it crawled out of and let it go. There must be a small stream or pond close by.

Putting it in some water was smart, but it would be a good lesson for your child if you release it back into the wild. I'd suggest taking it to the nearest stream and letting it go. The crawdad will be happiest in its natural setting.

you could probably keep it in an aquarium. they are tough and do pretty well. crawdads are unique as they dont necesarily need a body of water to survive. in the appalachan mountains they live in damp holes in the ground and come out at night to forage. theyre interesting creatures and your son could learn some things about them by keeping it. or you could eat it. but dont just stomp it or let it die and waste the meat.

Crawdads love Tater Tots
You can keep the alive with a fish tank pump and aerator.
If they die they are good with Tater Tots

I assume you live near a creek or pond. If I were you, I'd put it back in the pond. You can put it near cat tails etc... so the babies have somewhere to hide for protection. If you are going to TRY to keep it, Crayfish WILL eat dry cat food that you just drop in the water. Don't put too much in or it will just rot and turn the water gross.

You should take this opportunity to show your son the importance of life and freedom, and take a trip to the creek, and let them go. They will only die if you try to keep them. They need to be in water, but also need to be ablt to get out for air. They eat the feces of other fish and decaying plants, as well as meat. Hope the water wasn't clorinated you put them in...... Good luck.

I gave a couple of these to a friend and they had them for years.
They kept them in their fish tank with their fish.
At one point they "Shed" their shell!
Big kick for the kids!
I believe they eat brine shrimp but call the fish store and ask.
Have fun!
