I'm a Canadian who travelled to the US last week and was amazed by all the american flags (not necessarily in a good way). I saw a garbage man with an American flag on his back. I saw American flags painted on the whole sides of buildings, barns and trailers. I saw Uncle Sam keeping guard on someone's porch. It's one thing to have pride in your country but oh my GOD! Canadians are proud too but we don't have maple leaves on our doors and cars and backs and mailboxes. Can anyone explain the flag obsession? (I'd just like to point out I had a great trip- I was in NH and it was absolutely beautiful)

It depends on where you go. Some parts of the country are very 'conservative', esp small towns, so you'll find more of that there. In California there isn't so much of it anymore but after 9/11 you couldn't look in any direction without seeing a flag, even on the sides of cars & the backs of pickup trucks.
Remember, we still have a lot of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan so people are showing their support for our military.
BTW, I've read that the Danes are worse than we are! lol
Glad you had a nice trip - come back soon!

I'm sure you remember 9/11/01. I never seen so many flags! All cars posted a sticker flag and most still do today. We Americans are proud of our country. It's mostly due to 9/11, that is the new day of infamy! I can't believe what took place and how any human being could be in their right mind feeling good about killing for no reason. God bless the victims & our troops.
God bless you.

We are just very proud of our Country and we show those Stars and Strips because of One Thing. Of course the Stars are for the 50 States that are United. Now, the Stripes are for the Blood and Bodies of those who have given their lives to make this country and keep it. Right now, we have our Blood and our Bodies in another part of the world again! That is why we all Fly our Flag more now. To back those who are doing their job! I did just answer a question to a person who was speaking bad about Canada and now I run into this Question. Yours is not bad but I hope the answers does help you understand we love our Country and we will never hate it!!

As an American I must say to you that displaying of the American Flag is our way to show our love for Our country. Not just that we are patriotic, but we absolutely have a strong love for the land that we live in, and the freedom that comes with living here.We display Our Flags to let all know we appreciate being free.We display the Flag to say hey I'm American and I know I'm blessed to be free and have so many freedoms. That's what displaying the American Flag is all about.
THAT'S WHAT IT IS with Americans and their stars and stripes!!

Something about that Americana type feel that it has. I think due to what this country has been going through since 9-11 you see even more flags symbols everywhere than before. I admit, it can be overkill and sometimes used in tacky ways. So many people have a kid in the military or know one and is connected in some way. Or maybe they had a son killed in Iraq. I think it is a way for people to silently show their support. But what do I know.

It's called national pride.
Boy, you really wouldn't like Malaysia. It's common to see Malaysian flags everywhere, including the majority of cars on the expressway.
You got a problem with that?

Actually, I don't see why anyone from outside the US would find it a big deal.

Americans obsessed? This seems idiotic considering I see the maple leaf on everything in Canada, including McDonald's golden arches (did you see the stars and stripes on McDonald's golden arches in NH?). Wendy's in Canada has a maple leaf in place of the apostrophe. Arby's in Canada also have a maple leaf in place of the apostrophe. Super 8 Motels have two red maple leafs on the signs. There are countless other examples...

I've even seen red maple leafs on Labatt Blue beer cans and bottles in the states.

Talk about shoving the maple leaf down our throats!!!

On the other hand, Wal-Marts in Canada have a hyphen in place of the star (to not offend Canadians).

Hmmm...

Some of us are patriotic and do actually love our land. And for many years, I have flown our flag in front of my house all year long.

It's Pride, we are just really proud of of nation and the strength and loyatly we all have. We don't do it to show off, it's just natural for us to want to wear it or display it.
