Addiction IS an illness, regardless of what the substance or outlet of choice is.

Since we're talking drugs, we'd FIRST take into consideration the nature of the child's personality. N.A. ISN'T for everyone just as AA isn't.

Some people thrive in group settings, others wither.

As with everything else in life, you have to find that "niche" where the person in need finds solace, trust, acceptance and respect.

Seeking out the right "treatment" for someone isn't an easy thing because you're not that person, even if you've "been there" yourself. You can pull out all the arsenal in the world though if the person isn't ready to accept treatment or be accepted in any form of treatment, then it's been done in vain.

The common resources of choice that are available are great, though only IF the person feels the connection with the group, the center, the hospital...etc.

Sometimes you have to go that extra mile to find "treatment" that's right for that person and along the way you have to remember you can't put blinders on. You have to remain open to suggestions of others that have gone through alternative ways towards their recovery.

TALK to everyone and anyone you can who's been "that" person. Ask them what's worked for them.If it's meeting, go to the meetings, hopsitals, centers yourself to see IF you feel the person you're trying to help would thrive or wither there. Draw from there.

Above all remain strong and consistant in your stand and always remember, quitting the fight to succeed is never an option.

I would recommend rehab or detox if needed, and a good individual therapist who specializes in addictions. Also, Smart Recovery is an alternative to AA/CA/NA and is less spiritually-based. Below are some links.

Good luck!

Put the child in a special hospital where the drug could work itself from the child's system. Then put the child in an intensive course of specialized education designed to help the child discover the reason the child needs to dissociate him/herself from his/her own conscious awareness. This educational program might take as long as two weeks.

I'd slap my child in a rehab center, faster than they can say "s***!" I don't play! And I'd hop on the horn to my child's buddies parents, and forewarn them that they probably have a problem on their hands also!

I would try the local Teen Challenge. They seem to have a high success rate.
