What does hydrophoby mean as used in "The Call of the Wild"?

It's a question in my daughter's homework and we can't find it in the right context to go with the story.

Rabies is correct, although I don't know why a term meaning 'fear of water' is used for rabies...I'll have to do some research.

p.s. Hydrophobia is what Old Yeller had, too.

Hydrophoby was how they said Hydrophobia, which is Rabies
