And what tests do they perform to see if you have one?

A BIG sign is if you have more abdominal discomfort when you have an empty stomach than when you have food in your stomach. This is due to the stomach acid being able to come directly into contact with the ulcer and cause that burning sensation and pain. Food helps dilute the acid. If you're in pain when hungry and eating helps the pain subside, you may very well have an ulcer.

There is one test that is called an EGD (for short) where they insert a tube down your throat and look directly into your esophagus and stomach and can actually see ulcers. This is done under light anesthetic and isn't painful. I had one done and went out for lunch afterward! If they doctor finds an ulcer, he/she will usually prescribe an acid reducing pill and sometimes antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria that causes ulcers---Helicobacter pylori.

One classic sign of ulcer is abdominal pain (mostly on the left upper abdomen). If the ulcer is bleeding, you will have vomiting with blood or episodes of black stools. Gastric (stomach) ulcer pain is usually relieved by food intake. Duodenal (first part of the small intestine right below the stomach) ulcer pain worsens with food ingestion.

On either case, a gastroenterologist would most probably want to do an endoscopy (EGD) to directly see your esophagus, stomach and duodenum. It is a very minor procedure. Your throat will be sprayed with anesthetic to numb your gag reflex and as (mldohm) said, it is done under light intravenous sedation.

The doctor may prescribe an antacid to neutralize the stomach acid, a medication to reduce acid-production in the stomach or antibiotics for H.Pylori (bacteria that causes ulcer) as (mldohm) mentioned above.

adominal pain.....anemia if its a bleeding ulcer. Before they do tests they usually recommend a regimen of antacids to see if that clears it up. The test they do to look is an upper GI and not very comfortable......
