Does anybody else get tired of pretending that 1984 and Animal Farm are the only books that George Orwell ever wrote? I know that he has legitimate readers, myself included, but tons of people who call themselves his fans don't seem to have read anything other than those two books.

Why are they only books that anybody ever claims they've read? Because it sounds good in a conversation. That's the whole point of reading to some people.

Keep the Aspidistra Flying was a beautiful and twisted story about angst, passion and poverty. Who ever talks about that? Who conserves electricity and contributes to a coalworkers union because of The Road To Wigan Pier?

Does this bother anyone else about this or another author? Aldous Huxley and Ayn Rand are great examples, too.

I don't have a magic points wand, so I just closed my eyes and pointed.

Jeez, where to start... The people that are on this site don't even KNOW who George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Ayn Rand are for chrissake!!! They obviously can't spell (or figure out where the "spell check" button is), and probably can't even read above a 3rd grade level. *Sigh* Good luck!!!

You will have better luck finding these people at Librarything. It just takes a minute to join and you get to list the first 200 books for free. There you can type in the names of your favourite books/authors and find many people with the same interests. Some will write reviews and you can write your own. Like Y!A, there is a way to contact others and chat back and forth about those authors.

Give it a try. This is an intellectual wasteland!

I must admit that yes I am one of those Orwell fans. Maybe because I read 1984 in 1984 when I was 13 years old. Thought it interesting and only later in life fully appreciated its meanings. I feel the same way about people who like to make jokes about Douglas Addams but only read a couple of the full series of Hitchhiker's books--almost no one bothered with Mostly Harmless. Same for anyone who wants to talk about Frank Herbert and Dune, but never read the other 5 books in that series.
Arthur C Clarke is another author. Most saw and maybe read 2001, but didn't bother to read the rest of THAT series.
Never read The Fountainhead, but did Atlas Shrugged, does that count?
