You need to do a couple things. I'm a pro .

First, you will need to Fertilize the lawn. If you have existing weeds(not crabgrass) you may want to use a weed and feed product. It will help with existing weeds. Make sure its a quality product and its wet when it goes down to stick .

You may also apply a later application of crabgrass preemergent in the fall to aid in Springtime germination of Crabgrass. You will still want to apply Crabgrass preventer in Spring, but the fall app will help if pressure was strong this year. The crabgrass will be dying soon, but those seeds are waiting to come back next year.

Lastly, Early green is great in spring. Dont fertilize the lawn until May 1st if you do this method.

Wait until the lawn is dormant, apply Fertilizer(no need for slow release this time of year) at the normal rate. This maybe around thanksgiving, but your lawn will be green and lushly in MArch without getting all that unhealthy flush growth. You wont have to mow as early if you can delay your spring APP until MAy 1.

Use crabgrass inhibitor inlate February. Don't worry about fertilizer until late May. Grass has no problem growing in the early spring. Right now you can have your lawn core aerated, seeded and spread with lime pellets. If you do this you need to water until new grass is visible and don't mow until a week later. When you fertilize in late May also spread a broadleaf weed killer.

12 pack of beer and 15 gallons of water. Mix in a lawn sprayer and add 2 cups of epsom salt and spray on the lawn. My grandpa swears by this and his lawn always looks beautiful with no crabgrass or dandelions. Not sure why it works, but it does. Way cheaper than commercial fertilizers too. We live in NE Ohio too in Wayne County.

A lawn fertilizer and weed killer in one. Like Scott's, but make sure you use the fall kind. If you use a name brand, it is usually the right mix that you need.
