We have had alot of rain the past month and today I noticed rings of toad stools(fairy rings) in some neighbors yards. I was wondering what causes this to happen? Too much moisture? Mold? Mildew? what?

Fairy Ring is a problem for golf courses as well as for the homeowner and there appears to be very little we can do to control it.

Usually, the fungi (mushrooms) begin to grow on buried pieces of wood (left from construction), dead roots and branches from a tree or an old tree stump that's situated somewhere under the turf. Since mushrooms love decaying matter, they begin to grow and spread on the thatch (decomposting grass of the turf).

The brown ring that you see is caused by the mushrooms growing radially in the soil and creating such a dense mass of mycelium that they prevents water from penetrating into the rootzone and therefore causing the turfgrass to die from lack of moisture. The dark green that you see is caused from the mushrooms feeding on the decomposing organic matter and releasing the nitrogen. You'll probably find that this disease is more severe on lawns with inadequate moisture and very little fertilizer.

The disease is very difficult to control or eradicate but there are several suggestions that can help the homeowner.

1) Remove any pieces of wood or roots that you might suspect are in the soil. This is probably going to be easier if you remove the turf and can roto-till deep enough to uncover the decomposing pieces of wood/tree.

2). Aerate very aggressively over the existing area that is infected and aerate the area at least 2 feet further out than is infected. This will help water penetrate those areas much easier. It's suggested that you use a "wetting agent" to help the water penetrate the thatch and soil. (Wetting agents are similar to soaps that help break down surface tension in the soil). You can find any number of wetting agents online.

3) Dethatch your lawn so that water can penetrate much easier.

4) Fertilize so that your lawn will become green and match the circular areas and you may not have such a unsightly problem.

Hope this information answered some of your questions.

I live in Oregon close to Grants pass and my hubby has been water everynight and guess what...toad stools so I`d believe it would be too much watering and moisture..He is going to start watering in the morning now and that should stop the moisture which turns to mold...And that causes toad stools {fairy rings}
