my brother gave the two turtles a bath and one of the turtles' eyes are swollen and red when they are closed. he think that the temperature of the water may be a factor. i went on line to search for a solution and have found some answers. However, none seem to match the turtle's condition. I would like the address to a vet that specializes in reptile health.

Vets- look for a local vet that deals with reptiles, exotic pets, or birds.

Swollen eyes can be caused by many things- Vitamin A deficency, dirty water, etc.

Before you pop for a vet, try this:
(Note- this assumes you have a 'pond turtle', like a Red-ear slider or Painted turtle. If it is a differnet species, please let us know!)

1. Reseach the species on-line. Try the sites posted below. Check your cares and diet against the recommendations and see if there are some glitches you can deal with.

2. Fix any glitches in care or diet discovered above. Turtles are not super-easy pets, so this step may cost you some money and work- but it will be worth it in the end.

3. Clean the turtle cage totally. Clean the inside and any decorations, etc. with diluted chlorine bleach. Let sit for at least 15 minutes and rinse well. Rebuild the cage.

4. For the next month, focus on a few things:
- keeping the cage clean
- minimal stress, noise, handling, or 'looming' over the turtles
- following the recommended care procedures as well as possible

5. Boost the tank heat a few degrees. Use your turtle's behavior as a guide- if it seeks the cooler areas, cool things down a bit. If it seeks heat, boost temps a little. If it basks all the time, simulate a warmer sun. If it hides in the shade, turn down the lighting a little. The goal is to get it to use the entire tank as the day goes along.

6. Improve the diet. Many cases of swollen eyes are indeed a dietary issue- turtle diets are surprisingly complicated. The easiest solution is to use a high-quality pelleted food- which means the more expensive stuff. Cheap food (pet or human) uses fillers and less nutritious ingredients.

7. Over the next month, keep a record of the turtle's condition. If it gets better, great- document that and keep going. If it gets worse, go to the vet.

By the way- the stuff above is usually called 'hospital tanking'. Hospital tanks are usually used for new and sick animals to help them get healthy again. It is best if you can establish a hospital tank for each turtle and keep them seperated for now- as long as you can afford to treat each one well.

They have a bacterial infection: answer: whatever tank they are in reduce the water level by a great amount; they should be OUT of the water for atleast 3 or 4 hours a day; THE BACTERIA IS IN THE WATER so as long as the turtles are in the water all the time; eyes will be "shut" quickly add 2 or 3 drops Fish Oil to the turtles eyes; DO NOT TOUCH they eyes; STOP the drops 100%; get the fish oil; add to mister; mist...!

Your turtle needs to see the vet right away. Call the vet that you usually take your pets to and see if they treat turtles. If you don't have a vet you could call the animal shelter and ask for a recommendation. But take the turtle to be treated right away.

If you want a vet's address we'd have to know where you live. I could give you a lot of addresses but they might not be anywhere near you
