If Alcoholics Anonymous IS an option, it's not a very good one.

Here a list of methods in order of effectiveness:

(note: AA is way down the list)

The method that has the highest number of successes is doing it on your own. It may only work about 5% of the time, but so many people attempt it this way that 80% of the people who have quit used no method at all.

We used Motivational Enhancement where I worked with dual diagnosis clients.

Smart Recovery is an AA alternative, which is less spiritually based. I would give that a try. If not, I would find a good addictions therapist and go from there.... Also, rehab or detox if needed.

Addiction counselor, books, meditation, online AA/recovery support groups. Make sure you have a strong support system, friends/family. Have to ask though, why isn't AA an option?
