Can someone explain what exactly liberalism is? I mean you hear people say "I'm liberal" and equate liberalism=democrats, but I'm still confused. I think it's unfair that she's attacking liberals, what about conservatives? I'm pretty sure they have a lot of holes in their philosophy.

Liberal comes from the latin word for freedom - 'liber' - thus a liberal believes in freedom. 'Classic liberals' are those who believe in small government and lack of restrictions. These days, in America, that meaning is pretty much defunct and the word has almost become dirty. Liberals as they are defined in modern America stand for big government, and personal freedom to the point of licentiousness (social rather than economic liberalism: pro-choice, gay rights, non-traditional families). In Europe The Netherlands is probably the most liberal country, and has very few government restrictions on sex, drugs, etc.

But liberals have also been responsible for such worthy things as social security, and noted conservative Pat Buchanan called the '60s civil rights movement 'liberalism's finest hour'. This is not to say it has no flaws - I think an excess of liberalism can result in a dangerous abandonment of traditional values - but it is not as awful as people like Coulter have made it out to be. A healthy country will find a balance between both.

Coulter is simply an attack dog for the neo conservatives. She makes absolutely no sense, has no shame and plagiarizes like a fiend.
Liberalism is the idea that the government should actually help people. As opposed to the current conservative notions that people are to be used and the only aid government should give is to big businesses.
My opinion is that Coulter, Limbaugh and O'reilly are nothing more than shills for the Karl Rove neoconservatives. They try to say they are fair and unbiased but in reality are only spouting their party lines and getting rich by doing it. No matter what is occuring in the world their spin is that the good is done by republicans and the bad by democrats. That can't always be true but it is to them and they are lying their way all the way to the bank while the US goes down the tubes.

The premise of Ann Coulter's book is that "liberalism" is a religion in and of itself. (not stating my view here at all). The liberals she is talking about (there are many kinds) are very much for the seperation of church and state. They take church nativity scenes at government buildings to court. They also believe that only evolution should be taught in public schools (not the idea of a creator). They also believe that abortion should be legal (she does not). That's why the title of her book is "Godless". That's her thesis. She is very right wing to the extreme, but these issues are up for honest debate.

Well that's a real doozy of a question. The meaning of liberal has changed over the years. In today's USA political scene, in a nutshell, liberalism basically means cradle to grave government care/the government is the answer to all our needs. Conservatives are more 'rugged individualist' types who believe capitalism and free enterprize offer the best way for people to take care of themselves. Conservatives: "Get a job!" Liberals: "Let the government give you a job, a doctor, a house, groceries, transportation, electricity, free education for life, and of course you won't need any guns..."

Ann Coulter is to the conservatives what Michael Moore is to the liberals. She's a right wing extremist.

Liberals tend to believe that government can help everyone and that everyone is worthy of help. Conservatives tend to believe that government should not be in the helping business and that some people are less worthy of help than others. This definition has shifted in recent years because of the Bush Republicans who want to introduce religious dogma into government & law -- they want government to be in the helping business, but only for religions that they approve of.

Ann Coulter is a dangerous radical who people listen to because she is blond.

Liberals believe that we all have a responsibility to help those who are in need and who are worse off than we are. Conservatives believe that it's every man for himself and himself alone.

Paradoxically, the so-called religious right follows the conservative mantra, not because they think conservatives are more god-like than liberals, but because conservatives are more likely than liberals to force "Christian values," such as opposition to abortion, on the rest of us.

if by a "Liberal" (you) mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."
