Many say that the levees were destroyed (there will be a movie about this, it is already in production). how does a place flood AFTER a storm hits...

Spike Lee did a film that aired last week about Katrina's effects on N.O.Actually the levees were built to withstand a catagory 3 storm. The 17th street canal was not. The storm surge was far greater than expected because the storm went from Cat.3 when we went to bed to cat.5 in am.Caught us all by surprise. The 9th ward is deffinately not the only place that flooded but it gets all the news coverage.Parts of the westbank flooded also as did Chalmette and Plaqemines Parish.Just because a storm passes over or thru a city it isn't over. The swelling of the river and the tidal surge had a lot to do w/it. New Orleans was on the GOOD SIDE of the storm, imagine if we weren't. The storm takes hours to pass it isn't like a thunderstorm. It takes hours just to get to the EYE and then several more hours for it to completely pass. Thats alot of wind and rain in just a few hours. They say our city's levees are ready,THEY ARE NOT.I AM A HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIM FROM NEW ORLEANS,and we lost everthing.

the water rises after teh storm has stoped, and the water comes in pretty strongly, and the levees were probably damaged during the storm as well, lets hope they learn from last year and make them strong this time.

Because of the way the storm pushes the water. Then the Levy's gave way. Its very common for rivers to rise long after the rain has stopped.

For years and years money that was suppose to be spent for the upkeep and improvement of the levees was stolen by corrupt LOCAL government officials. Substandard materials and technique were used.

There had been more than one book written about the impending disaster way before Katrina. This was all preventable...the levees should NEVER have been built. The wetlands should never have been destroyed to make more space for expansion. These wetlands were vital to the protection of the city.

You should NEVER live in a fishbowl...unless you are a fish.

People knew they weren't safe but they were betting their lives on the good will of God himself. Bad decision on their part.

The levees maintained their integrity for as long as they could, but as water pushed against them for an extended period of time, they gave way. Kind of like the straw that broke the camels back. you wouldn't say that someone delibrately gave the camel a hairline fracture so that its back would break, would you?

The MS River flows. Water kept flowing, and the river kept rising.
