My mechanic's in Missouri---she says it's either: my starter's burnt out (had arching off a bad neg. battery cable), or the ignition coil's gone bad (bought at a store we won't name, but I've had to replace every other part I've bought there within 4 months, incl. the spark plugs). Any recommendations on a cheap way to figure out which one? Single mom with 5 kids, and this is my only transport. (Mechanic is recently certified, with a 4.0 average.) Yes, the battery harness was replaced, correctly, and the battery has a full charge (took it and had it checked). I can't afford towing, or someone who's going to charge more than $20 to come out and check it onsite. Not enough room to describe all the minute details here, like I did with her, but she says it absolutely is *not* the alternator. TIA.

Just the facts for now single mom with five kids there are not enough seat belts in that little car to safely transport five and you?
Now tell me what do you expect in a 12 year old four cyl economy car. Does the battery have enough power to turn on the headlights brightly like when the car is running? That eliminates the battery. Does turning the key to start make clicks or not. Dashboard warning lights, work Eliminates the ingnition switch. Then you must go to the next check. And this is necessary before you go down to "AUTO-X" parts store to buy the starter. IS THERE ANY OIL IN THE ENGINE? Full and clean? Next step turn the engine with the crank shaft pulley bolt or pulley it self to make sure the engine can turn two full revoultions. Now buy the starter.... I will pray for you and the one kid with out the seat belt!

need more information, does the engine at least turn over, if so the starter is working...if the engine turns over but won't start it either spark to the engine, fuel, or air....your engine needs all 3 to run...with more information i might be able to help..
