I am an MD. The first thing you need to do is to establish the correct diagnosis. Generally, there are two completely different kinds of ear infections: 1)otitis media, and 2) otitis externa, otherwise known as "swimmer's ear". Otitis media generally occurs when your Eustatian tube is blocked, usually by a cold or allergies, allowing infection to set in. The preferred treatment is antibiotics and decongestants, but if I were an MD stuck on an island somewhere with no antibiotics, then puncturing the eardrum is effective, and was often done by doctors in the pre-antibiotic era. Inserting tubes in the eardrum is a still-used modern variant of this seemingly barbaric treatment. The treatment for swimmers ear is easier. A drop of vinegar in the ear 3-4 times a day is highly effective, assuming you don't have any significant wax buildup. If you have excessive wax buildup, then this must be cleared out before proper healing and cure of the infection can occur. Never put Q tips in your ear. That only jams the wax very far back in the ear canal, causing more problems. They taught us in medical school that the only instrument that an ordinary person should ever put in their ear is their elbow. I think you can see that the problem is a little more complex than you might think at first glance. Yogi berra once said that "You can observe a lot by just looking" and I agree that someone needs to take a look in your ear, at least. Yogi Berra also said "Most of this game is half mental", and this also applies to the delivery of health care, i.e. you kind of need to know what you're doing before you treat someone for a disease. They say that a person who tries to doctor himself has a blithering fool for a patient. I think it would be best for you to go to an urgent care center.

I know this sounds corny but even as a child I would put a cotton ball in my ear to keep any air or loud noise that may irritate the ear drum. Keeping your ears clean is the best method even with a little warm water from the shower and then tilt your head never use q-tips they just push the wax back and block the ear drum which can cause more ear-infections. There are also some good over the counter medications that can help the ear infection and also keep your ears wax free and clean! Good Luck!

put a few drops of peroxide in the infected 2x a day swab it dry with a Q tip than add a few drops of swwt oil ( found at any store or pharmacy ) keep head tilted for a few seconds than add a cotton ball to keep it in do this 2x a day for 7 days if that does not clear it up you will have to seek antiobiotics

If it is actually an infection it needs treatment with antibiotics - home remedies won't work.

Store bot Peroxide. Drip a few drops into the ear, let it fizzle, then put a cotton ball - overnight. It's amazing, it works virtually overnight. My husband's family - from the Midwest (farmers), taught him that - and I've tried it - it works!

Take homeopathic enchinacea per twice a day by mouth, and drop a little sweet oil, or olive oil in you ear.
By the way try to stay away from antibiotics. It does crazy things to your body.

I suggest a combo of Vineger and water. it rinses out the ear and helps relieve pain. NEVER USE Q_TIPS. it jsuts pushes the wax farther into the ear.

I heard garlic. It's what is in antibiotics. Also don't use any q-tips right now. Put a cooton ball in your ear in your showers. Saline solution to flush it out.
