Conciliatory means friendly and agreeable. Conciliatory remarks are helpful because such remarks try to please and make friends with people after some kind of disagreement with them.

A good example of conciliatory remarks is in election politics. Every political party has a leadership competition and election once in a while to determine who will be the party's leader. The competitors and their supporters often argue with each other and say uncomplementary things about each other. But after one of them wins and becomes the leader of the party, then he or she usually makes a conciliatory speech to unite the party and to make friends with his or her former opponents.

Conciliatory remarks are helpful in overcoming an initially hostile response. For example: You unknowingly enter a private room in a restaurant.
"What?"
"I'm so sorry, I had no idea this was a private function. I apologize for the intrusion." (These are conciliatory remarks designed to overcome animosity)

It's all about making up after an argument. Conciliatory words would be like "I'm sorry", "Let's be friends", "Let's not fight any more"
