Hello Nate S. ,
I remember about 45 years ago... being taught in school the following info: As Earth spins on its axis, it helps cause the wind to blow. Due to the shape of the planet, mountains, oceans, and so on; the winds veer off to the north or south in different areas. The jet stream is involved too. So basically, the wind travels around the planet in bands, much as we see on Jupiter ! Where you see the bands meet on Jupiter and here on Earth, the wind is very slow or non existent. The winds are depressed. These areas are called doldrums ! And it follows that when we are feeling blue, or 'down', we say we are in the doldrums. You know... not much happin'in !
Peace man. Butch

Sailors noticed the stillness of the rising (and not blowing) air near the equator and gave the region the depressing name "doldrums." The doldrums, usually located between 5° north and 5° south of the equator, are also known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ for short. The trade winds converge in the region of the ITCZ, producing convectional storms that produce some of the world's heaviest precipitation regions. The ITCZ moves north and south of the equator depending on the season and solar energy received.

Doldrums
A part of the ocean near the equator, abounding in calms, squalls, and light, baffling winds, which sometimes prevent all progress for weeks; -- so called by sailors.
