Well... For starters, go to the run prompt, type "Services.msc" without the quotes and hit enter. Disable any/all services you dont use/need, If you dont understand the description of a service; dont touch it!

Another simple tip; Go back to the command prompt, type "msconfig" without the quotes and hit enter. Click the start up tab and uncheck ALL programs. Why? Because in reality, you dont need any programs starting up when windows starts.

NOTE: The following tips will compromise the fancyness of XP!

1. Go to control panel and hit the display applet. Click the appearance tab, change the windows/buttons to "Windows Classic Style". Makes it look alittle old school, but saves some system resources. If you want to take this a step further, change the color scheme to black and white only.

2. Right-click "My computer" and choose properties on the shortcut menu. Hit the "advanced" tab and the settings button in the performance area. On the visual effects tab, hit custom and uncheck ALL options. This will make everything seem more rigid, but it will, again, save system resources

3. This one will scare some people and I dont recommend it unless you know how to work with a registry editor.
First if you have service pack 2 installed you will need to find any computer with Windows 95, 98, NT, 2K, or XP with service pack 1 only. When you do, go to the Windows installation directory, then to system32. Look for a file called Progman.exe. When you find it, transfer it to the same location on your computer(assuming it has XP with SP2) If it asks you if you want to over right the existing file, hit yes. SP replaced Progman.exe with a dummy file that doesnt work. Why? Ask microsoft!
After all of that(if you had XP with SP2) go to the run prompt. Type "Regedit" without the quotes and hit enter. Go to this location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Look for a key called: Shell
When you find it, change it from Explorer.exe to Progman.exe

Now when you reboot your default shell will be program manager. Its very similiar to Windows 3.X's interface. It doesnt limit your control in anyway, its just a simpler GUI with no active desktop.

On average XP shouldnt be using anymore than 56MB of ram on a clean boot... You also shouldnt have anymore than 18 processes running on a clean boot.
Here is a screen shot of what program manager looks like incase you are kinda skeptical about it...

It saves quite a hefty ammount of resources overall.

- Run DISK CLEANUP regularly
- Run Defrag regularly
- Check your Anti-virus solution, get updates and run scans.
(Avoid the Internet Security editions, since they carry way too much baggage and slow down your system)

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster

- go to START and RUN, type MSCONFIG and uncheck programs that you do not need in the STARTUP section.

- Get more RAM. With Windows XP, it would be better with 512MB and more like awesome with 1GB or 2GB. Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com
