The standard generally used is QWERTY alphanumeric configuration. This is used also in typewritters.

The modern english keyboard was developed during the age of the typewriter.

Typists were typing so fast they'd jam the machines, so they actually created the modern keyboard to slow typists down. It worked for a while, but once people got used to the new arrangement, speeds picked up again.
