but soon after we bought it I decided to go back to Australia so there has been no one at the house for almost a year now. I dont know if there are taxes that we should be paying that I dont know about. We have a mortgage and pay some through that but are there fees to pay to the city council or anything like that?

yes - property taxes most always have to be paid. Perhaps there are some other obligations in addition and you should check with the local citihall and tax office.

The point is that - if you do not pay the property tax and they (the ones who you own the taxes to) can not find you they will put your property up for auction.

In nearly all cases your mortgage payment will include impounds for the taxes. The mortgage servicing company will settle up with you annually and recompute the payments based on any tax or insurance increases.

On rare occasions there may be special assessments for such things as new sidewalks or road resurfacing. Make sure that the tax district has your current mailing address and sends copies of any bills and assessments to you, with the originals going to the mortgage company.

One thing to watch out for though. Most insurance policies will not cover you if the home is vacant for more than 30 days unless you have notified the insurance company of that fact. Some will cancel your insurance outright if the property is vacant while others will increase your rates, often significantly. Consider turning it over to a property manager and placing a tenant. This will help you make the mortgage payments as well as keep the property occupied.

you better check with the local county that you bought the house in. usually they are figured in with the monthly mortgage payment.
