Ok, it happened again. I am sure I sorted them into pairs before putting them into the machine.

The machine started, did it's thing, whirred around a bit then I went to get washing out and............ yep an odd sock!!

What happened to the other one?

This occurs regularly on account of what we psychiatrists call left sock insecurity complex. They try to run off together but the dominant right sock invariably takes the first step frightening the remaining left sock and causing them to search desperately amongst the other socks for a faithful mate (left socks are female). The right sock ends up hoping off on his own, usually ending up in a condo.

There is a sock monster similar in size and shape to an eel. It swims into your washing machine from the drain and it lives on socks. It only eats one sock at a time or it would have a bloated belly and get caught in the drain hose. I suspect that's why washing machines sometimes back up and you end up with water on the floor, you know, the beast has bitten off more than it can chew. But of course, no one has been able to catch one so their exact size and colour can only be guessed at.

You will get all sorts of silly answers about 'sock fairies' and so forth.

What REALLY HAPPENS is that sometimes a sock will degrade into lint and get sucked up the lint trap. This can happen if there is a brief fluctuation in temperature in your dryer....in the worst case scenarios this can cause a fire but if your lint trap is well cared for usually the smallest item in the dryer (usually a sock but ocassionally underwear) will experience an intense heat flash and will break down to lint like fluffs.

Ok serious answer-I always wonderd too until our washer stopped draining water. We had the man come to look at it and when he took it apart a sock was clogging the drain. Sometimes during the spin cycle the gravity sucks them up over that edge at the top of the washer tub and they get sucked down the drain. It's more common with baby socks, but can and does happen with adult socks too. My sock ended up costing me $150(lol) so you'd be better off to just but new unless you happen to be very handy with that kind of thing. Happy Sock Hunting!

I had the same problem now I bought these clips that I clip on like a pair when I wash socks and have not lost one pair since. Sometimes I think they go down the washer machines drain hose..that is the only logic thing that I could think of....GoodLuck to you!!!

they get stuck in the drain or go down the drain or under the tub. if it's your washer remove inside agitator and see if they are there if not remove drain tube and look there and look around the drum .try putting a filter on the drain. if not your washer place all socks into a weave type bag and tie close and wash then the so called "sock monster" will not get them because they can not go through mesh net.

My husband steals them when Im not looking because he knows this bugs the heck out of me (to solve this problem I now only buy grey hanes socks, after about 3 months I will have enough odd ones to pair together)

3 legged aliens steal them

Gnomes

Fairy's

Monsters
I dont care if someone says they go into the lint trap or whatever, I know someone is doing it..Grin

They say when you put stuff into the washer or dryer it goes to the third dimension, sometimes they don't make it out before the cycle ends. That's the theory of the odd sock! Hold on to it will show up again.

Have you ever heard of Bed - Bath and Beyond - They are in the beyond section.

But really, I used to have that problem often until I put one of those softener sheets in the dryer. My real theroy is that they cling to some other clothes. When you use a sheet, there is less static electricity so no clinging.
