That's a Psychology Question linked to Linguistics.

If you tell people to choose between 1 and 4, you've stated two numbers. Because of Social Stratification where people try to be different, people's natural inclination would be to choose their own numbers not stated

Since 1 and 4 have been provided by the person asking the question, the individual will process what numbers are between 1 and 4. Because the brain went through the effort of processing it, it would be much easier to use the data it has already come up with.

Because 2 and 3 are the numbers that surface, people who don't try to second guess by going back to 1 and 4 will choose the number that's easier to pronounce and takes the least amount of effort.

That's where we come back to Linguistics.

When you say the word "2," it takes a force of breath to expel air.using a punctuated sound for the letter "T." When it comes to the saying the word "3," it rolls off the tongue easily and the the "EE" sound is easier to maintain.

When you say "2," you have to hold your mouth in position to maintain that sound. When you say "3," you can draw your lips back in a comfortable position and you can hold that vowel sound much easier.

You can try this yourself. Try pronouncing "2" holding that vowel sound as long as possible and see how your face muscles tire more quickly than when you say "3" and hold that vowel sound.

It may seem like a subtle difference, but in all things, Water and Electricity flow in the Path of Least Resistence. In Linguistics, you'll naturally do the same thing and pronounce words which are easiest.

It's a split second decision done on your part unconsciously, but your Subconscious when given the choice will do that.

The reason why you'd see deviation with people chosing 1, 2, or 4 is if they've been conditioned somewhere in their lives to have an affinity toward a particular number. So if there is special significance, that's why they wouldn't normally choose three.

However, if you're talking about a "clean slate" mind, that is what people would linguistically gravitate toward.

That's why why certain vowels are more popular than others. Notice how "E" is the most common letter in the Alphabet. There's a test floating around where someone wrote something that doesn't use the Letter "E." That takes some concentration.

Most likely, if that 7th Grade Science Teacher is looking for an answer, it could be based off of the frequency of usage of the vowel "E" in "3"compared to the Letter "O" in the word "2."

You see this in the Game of Scrabble. When I play Scrabble, I always hope that I get an "E" because it's more versatile compared to A, I, O. and U. U is the most difficult vowel to spell words with.

A would be the next easiest followed by Letter I. O can work in conjunction with itself as OO in the form of a Diphthong, but so can EE. That's why E has an advantage over the other Letters. A can pair up with other Vowels liek AI in "rain" or "gain," but it's a different Letter.

Also, notice that with the other numbers 1, 2, and 4, they don't have the Letter E.

It relates to Science because it relates to Energy Output used to produce that sound. In terms of Linguistic Energy Efficiency, your Subconscious would naturally choose "E" because it's Easiest sound to produce and sustain.

1 is closed off Syllable as well as 4. 2 is not bad. 3 is open-ended. People naturally enjoy Freedom and the Number 3 provides the most Linguistic Freedom.

Try saying all those numbers and see which is the easiest to say for an indefinite period of time. With 1, you have to hold your tongue in position. With 2 and 4, you also have to contort your mouth in a very specific position.

With 3, you can just hold that vowel sound in the most relaxed position compared to the other numbers 1, 2, and 4.

I played Clarinet for 7 years and when it comes to your Amberture where you have to hold a note, you'd want a 3. The Clarinet Mouthpiece uses a "2" and "4" sounds and your lips get tired holding a prolonged note.

With Clarinets, you can hit high notes when you draw your lips back with a long "E" sound. Low notes require you to drop your jaw like you would when pronouncing "2" or "4," which gets really tiring.
