Some good advice out there, but I agree watch out for some that are perhaps trying to drum up business of their own at your expense. You don't mention whether you have someone to watch your child or how old. You're in a difficult position and there is no way to sugar coat it. Hopefully you have some one to watch your child while you work. My advice would be get some work doing something that you feel comfortable doing. Try for larger type companies that once you have your foot in the door, there may be opportunities for advancing to better paying jobs in the company. Larger companies also usually have better benefits - very important if you have a child and some even pay for night school. Try to go to school at night - if you feel you're capable of doing the work. Don't sell yourself short, but be honest with yourself. Good luck to you and may God bless you.

If you live in an area that has a national processing center for the IRS, you should DEFINITELY do all you can to get seasonal work there. The pay is $12/hour, full time plus some overtime. The work is from January to June (normally). You should be applying for these positions starting in September or October. You will also be eligible for unemployment when you are "laid off" at the end of the season. And you can come back and work the next season too.
(DO NOT be intimidated by the fact that it's the IRS. If you can file paperwork and/or do 10-key, chances are you WILL find a job there... with a little persistance.)
If you are not near an IRS processing facility, I definitely encourage you to seek government jobs... local, state, or federal. They pay much better than most other jobs you may be able to find at the moment. Go to www.usajobs.com to search federal jobs. Go to your state and local websites to search those jobs.
Another plus: If you do happen to find a job that is seasonal, you can spend that other time working PART TIME in a retail job. And in some states, you can still receive unemployment. You could also take some classes towards an associate's degree.
Hopefully, by earning that associate's degree, you'll be able to find a job as a pharmacy tech or an office assistant or something. Then you could receive that decent pay all year long instead of just 6 months out of the year.
P.S. I will echo what a couple of other people said. Don't listen to these people posting about "working from home" with just a small investment, blah blah blah. Those are pyramid schemes and will cause you way more trouble than they're worth. There are no shortcuts. You know? "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

With a GED in hand, I would say find a job that pays the bills for now, and then pursue some additional technical training. For example, certified nursing assistant or real estate license. One job I have heard pays well and has good benefits is working for UPS at one of their processing centers. The hours might be a little crazy, but I have know of people to do this as a part-time second job just for the benefits.

Top dollar job with a GED? No Ma'am. You can always look into the retail field because I know you don't want to work restaurants. I would suggest you get a retail job and go to a tech school on the side and pick up some kind of trade and then you can get the skills you need to acquire a top dollar job.

Hello~
lmbo!! You sure brought in the crowd....
Anyway, good luck on the TOP $ bit. If you can't work outside of the home, try in home child care... Maybe you could sell Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Sentsy, Stampin Up or something...??
I do Passion Parties and make good money, but I also work outside of the house. Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of women who make A LOT of money doing these parties. I usually keep right around $ 1,000 per month, but I do 4 parties per month consistently.
You can check out my profile if you want more info. OR you can go to www.wahm.com for some other ideas. (work at home moms)

Networking is a great way to earn money from home. Ever heard of Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Poor Dad? He has another book called "The Business School" and he talks a lot about network marketing strategies and getting on the right side of the cash flow quadrant. That's what I did when I started my own business at http://www.bedavis1.mywayout.net/ If you have a big enough dream, you can achieve anything :)
Good luck on your endeavor!

I've found an innovative way of working out of Home and is not a scam. It is especially suited for Stay-at-Home Moms and Dads, or for people who are currently inbetween jobs or for those looking to work in their spare time. It's legal, doesn't need any investment. You could take a look at it if you have an entrepreneurial spirit and are willing to do some out-of-the-box thinking.

Hella Woman,
Be wary too of the advice that you take in. I can already see hyperlinks that smell like "pyramid schemes". They are always looking for financially vulnerable people like urself.
Try out stuff like a small day care or something-somewhat older kids-to avoid potential legal complications. You may for instance start by working at one, then save up to establish your own, then with patience and dedication you might just get that "American Dream"

Work for yourself and become a Melaleuca Marketer. My Dad just got started and all it cost him was $29 for the business kit. You can set your own goals and decide how much time and effort you want to put in. I will give you his email address and if you're genuinely interested in the information, he will set up a phone appointment and give you more details. williamdale13@yahoo.com
