and / or at least have one as a backup for when the other one goes down (as I have experienced both as being moderately unreliable) ?

You could certainly have both as a back up for one another, but I don't think you can use both shotgun so to speak.

You can't have them both working together simultaneously to increase your speed. There are some programs that are in development now to allow you to do things like that, but they are very difficult to use.
But using one as a backup if the other goes down is a good idea, that is if you have enough money to pay for both at the same time.

You can get both but it would be on a separate line/cable. If you have more than one computer, you can have one or the other on one computer.It would be cool for when one does go offline but It would cost allot of money for both. I had com cast cable for 5 years and it didn't go down that often. I moved to the country and we now have phone line again. SUCKS!!!!

You can't combine them for greater speed, but you could use them as backups for each other. But that sounds like a lot of extra money each month for redundancy that you probably don't really need.
