First the shift lever at the transmission has a de-tent ball that holds the shifter in place. It is possible that it fell into the pan. It also could be that the cable or shift rod could become out of adjustment. Check this and then diagnose your slipping problem. Check the fluid level. I take it this is a automatic transmission. If it were a standard it could be that it has a bent shift fork, and the clutch either out of adjustment or worn out. Good luck.

There are many factors that can be the source of your problem. The first recommendation is to pull the trans dip stick and check the fluid level. Before adding the fluid, check for a burnt toast type smell. If there is this type smell, the repair shop is your next stop. With the engine running, parking brake set and shift in park position, bring fluid to the full level mark. Another source is broken engine mounts.

Check the tranny fluid level - if it's OK, it's the right time to visit transmission shop - most likely some of the clutches inside the tranny are gone

Hopefully it is just a simple linkage adjustment. Or it could be the detent ball on the shifter mechanism inside your tranny. Or it could be a worn bushing on the shifter. These are just a few suggestions, good luck.

Please provide us with the vehicle details !!!! Then a more accurate answer can be given. Believe it, but alot of 3 speed chrysler automatics had the shifter go from drive to neutral when stepping hard on the gas pedal just because of rusted linkage problems.

If it's an auto tranny.... you could simply be low on fluid, if not, then scrap that hunk and buy something reliable. DON'T buy an Aerostar. But that goes without saying, generally
