It depends on the state you live in. Some states only require one. In Texas you can be stopped and given a citation for only having one plate.

Call the Depart of Revenue (DOR) for your state and ask. They may have a website where you can email questions in. I would try that first before stopping by to see if you can have it done.

In australia - yes. Law says you need to have one front and back.

gray area in ca. you see a lot without a front one but I've never heard of any one getting a ticket for it, I still don't have one
