My mom put her last name on my social security and birth certficate, and now since her and my dad have been married (since a few months after i was born) I have used my dad's last name. I want to get a job, and do I need to change my SS card ? how would I go about doing so?

You would have to get your last name legally changed on your birth certificate. Then, you can go to the SS office and have it changed there. They'll need a copy of your legal change of name.

I was married for about 10 years before my last name was changed on my SS card. I kept sending in the paperwork and they'd turn it back for one reason or the other. We'd just file taxes in my maiden name and his name. We never had any issues with it. Finally moved to a town with a SS office brought them the same papers I'd sent in and it was changed to my married name that day.

If it means that much to you, tell you mom you want your last name legally changed. You'll need her help to complete this process. After that, SS will be easy.

Good luck!!

Well this involves a lot of questions - contact the Social Security Administration for the answers. You have to use your LEGAL name with them so if you have only changed your name out of convenience and your legal name is still your old name, you first need to resolve THAT issue by doing what you have to do to get your name legally changed to the name you want to use. It can be done easily and doesn't necessarily require an attorney. Since from what you say I'm guessing your dad's name is on the birth certificate citing him as your actual father it probably will be easy and may not require anything elaborate after all. Check your birth certificate, then contact the SSA either in your area or on the web at www.ssa.gov

If you are using your dad's name and your birth name is different on your birth certificate and your social security, you must either change your name legally to your dad's name or continue with your given name on your birth certificate.

If he adopts you, your name is changed automatically.

You have been using an "alias" up to now and it is not legal. You have no legal problems, but you cannot enter into contracts, or make a loan, with your "alias". You cannot just change your social security name without a legal name change. An attorney has to do that.

For a job you will have to use your given name at birth. It can be changed at a later date as per above.

Since your birth certificate says your last name is that of your mother, then technically that is your name, BUT if you really want to use your dad's last name, then yes. Your mom will have to change it on your birth certificate. Only then can you change it on your social security card. (unless you go through the hassle of going to court for a name change and presenting the court order to the s.s office, but that is the hard way

If your name on your SS card and birth certificate match, LEGALLY you are that person. If you want to go by another name you have to change that. You will have problems getting a job because they have to go by your legal name.

Your leagal name is the name on that SS card. If you get married, you can go by his name but untill you change through SS, you are leaglly still you. youn can get a DL say you are mary Y, but you will still be Mary X untill you change it with SS.

I think there are instructions on the SSI card itself for how to get a new card if you change your name--check the back of the card--it's been a while since I looked but I think it's there.
