About 4,000 children with Down syndrome are born in the U.S. each year. Although parents of any age may have a child with Down syndrome, the incidence is higher for women over 35 because the risk generally increases with maternal age. The chances are about 1 in 1,000 at age 25, 1 in 650 at age 30, 1 in 378 at age 35, and 1 in 106 at age 40.
At least 70% of babies with Down syndrome are born to women under age 35. The chance of having a second baby with Down syndrome is the normal risk based on the mother’s age + 1%

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that happens because there is an extra chromosome.
A deformation can happen from a number of things, but it would have to occur in the first trimester. After that, the baby is basically formed, except for the lungs and kidneys and it needs to put on weight.

I am by no means an expert on this, but if you have a child after the age of 35, your chances of the child having downs syndrome are greater. The older you get, the greater the chances.
