Toyota Corolla. Mine gets over 43 mpg on the highway and over 35 mpg in the city. I have a 4 door, but if you don't need that many, a 2 door looks like it is made for speed. I have had mine up to 80 mph and it drove great. I took it from the sea coast up into high mountains and it never failed. I went from desert to snow and it performed outstanding. If not the Corolla, then try the Yaris. It is a little smaller and gets the same, if not better, mpg. It is also about $5,000.00 less than the Corolla. Give them a test drive at your local dealer and see for yourself.

The old Triumph GT6's were capable of nearly 30 mpg, and a good one could be had for your budget. Sexy little cars, and sinfully easy to work on.

As for 80 mph from a Toyota Corolla, my inner speed demon has only this to say: "Built for speed?? BWAHAHAHAHA...!" Ferraris are built for speed. Without modifications, a Corolla is nothing but a ho-hum daily commuter. Get serious and buy yourself a Subaru WRX STi.

The new Tesla Roadster sportscar. You plug it in, it has a 250 mile range, gets the equivelent of something like 386 miles per gallon cost wise, and accelerates from 0 to 60 in right around 4 seconds. That being said, they are going to cost like $100,000 apeice and they are already sold out :)

Hard to find combination... what about Toyota Matrix or Pontiac Vibe? - about 26/31 mpg city/hwy. Red Matrix looks hot!
VW Golf or Rabbit - another choice.
