Thailand is one of the few countries that has never been a colony of any other country.
You are thinking of Taiwan. Taiwan is a separate country, for it has its own freely elected democratic government, currency, military, constitution and foreign relations. China wants Taiwan, because Taiwan was actually part of China for ONLY five years 1890-1895. There were a bunch of losers from China (the KMT) who ran away to Taiwan after the communists took control of China and claim to be the true government of China--these people are only 10% of the population of Taiwan, but managed to kill and scare enough Taiwanese (who did not speak Chinese at the time) so that they could not complain about being dominated by the brutal murderous corrupt dictatorship of Chiang Kai-Shek (the loser who could not even defeat the communists--so he decided to bully and kill a bunch of innocent Taiwanese instead.) Because of current political situations and the fear of a inhuman murderous nation of a billion people known as the People's Republic of China to the north, the Taiwanese tend to be shy about talking about how they are actually a sovereign nation.
Puerto Rico is absolutely a different kind of situation. That is a commonwealth that has an agreement with the United States to be part of its domain. They actually hold elections to vote on their status, and the population has choosen this. Pueto Rican are American Citizens, they share the same currency, military, the U.S. constitution, and hold U.S. passports. Taiwanese are not PRC citizens, they are citizens of Taiwan and have Taiwanese passports.
Hong Kong and Macau are possibly more similar to Puerto Rico, although not exactly the same situation.

Thailand is it's own country. The U.S. agrees with this so China and the U.S. will not get along because the U.S. observes Thailand as a sovern state and China still thinks it is a part of China. Pueto Rico is a territory of the U.S. The U.S. does not own them but will protect them as are own. They can become a state or their own county. The U.S. will actcept either but they are at a 50/50 split.

You have your countries mixed up. Thailand is an independent country that was never part of China.
Taiwan is a small island off the coast of China that used to be part of it.
In the 1930s, China had a civil war between Communist forces under Mao Tse-tung and Nationalist forces under Chiang Kai-Shek. The Nationalist forces lost and fled to the island of Taiwan. The Communists had no navy, so they couldn't go after them for several years.
Modern Taiwan is what remains of Chiang's China, while mainland China is still Communist.
Communist China regards Taiwan as a 'rogue province', but since the US is protecting Taiwan, China won't invade it.
Both sides consider themselves the 'true China'.

I know it is now ancient history, but if I recall correctly Thailand was on the Americans side during the war in Vietnam. I believe Thailand has been rather independent for more than a century (or am I just remembering the "King and I").

Thailand is its own country.
But there is many Chinese living there and therefore the Chinese influence is very high. Its Chinese people or children from Chinese people born and living in Thailand who control the economic in Thailand. All big business companies is owned by Chinese. They are clever in business, but I think that's the same all over the world.

Thailand is it's own country, formerly known as The Kingdom of Siam. Remember the old broadway musical; "The King and I" starring Yule Brenner? The setting was this Kingdom of Siam, currently known as Thailand. I can imagine however, China wishing Thiland was one of it's provences. Who knows, it might be that way someday.
