Where's the proof that the three wise men knew the earth was round. They came from the "east" to Jerusalem over land. However it is recorded in Job that the earth is "hanging upon nothing" in the expanse of the universe, Job 26:7(written in about 1473 BC). Isa 40:22 records God dwelling above the circle of the earth (written in about 732 BC). Columbus on the other hand lived after the "dark ages". It was a time when anything not understood was suppressed or labeled as demonized. So if you went to the priest with a question or oddity you'd find yourself in jail and if you persisted they've have burned you at the stake. It was a time when many great men of science were persecuted. They said Columbus was crazy and Queen Isabella was his last hope. Even though he discovered America, he didn't get a lot of respect or reward, he died alone and in poverty.

At that time every educated person knew that the world was round. The Greeks and Arabs had calculated the size of the earth centuries before. Columbus believed the earth was smaller.

Once the telescope was invented, people noticed that when ships sailed off into the distance, their masts stayed visible for a while after the rest of the ship had vanished from site. Only on a sphere would this be the case.

In earlier times the shape of the planet was deduced from noting the position of stars as seen from different points on the earth.
