I like trilogies because you get to follow the story through the years but Prequels gives you the reasons why those choices were made. I love both of them but I choose Prequels.

I would have to vote for the Trilogy. I like it when the author has a vision of her or his story from the start, and doesn't have to resort to gimicks to fill in the blanks.
That said, some prequels are great, and some trilogies suck.
But for the most part i like to see things cronologically: a story arc.

I like a good prequel. If it answers questions that sequels can't without a flashback. It also helps to understand characters better. I would like to see a Nightmare on Elm Street prequel and see Freddy as the Springwood Slasher before the angry mob burns him alive.

trilogy, prequels are weird when they look better than the original.

I like both, I like stories that continue so you that you know what happens to the characters and I like prequels so you can see how the story began.
